Multilingual Interpretation and Translation Research and Studies Events
Overseas sinologists, interpreters, and translators are important promoters of Chinese literature to the world. They are proficient in both their native tongues and Chinese, and their translated works align with the reading habits and aesthetic interests of foreign readers, making significant contributions to portraying an authentic, multi-dimensional and comprehensive China to the rest of the world.
To enhance the communication and exchange of ideas between outstanding young sinologists, interpreters, and translators from abroad with Chinese writers and to provide the young sinologists with an in-depth understanding and experience of both the theory and practice in translating contemporary Chinese literature, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) has launched the Multilingual Interpretation and Translation Research and Studies Events. The aim is to address the challenges that interpreters and translators face during the translation process of Chinese literary works so that the translations are faithful, expressive, and elegant, thereby assisting the interpreters and translators in their professional growth.
In 2021, as part of the Multilingual Interpretation and Translation Research and Studies Program, Zhang Wei, Li Juan, A Yi, Xue Tao, Wang Weilian and Cai Jun from China were invited to engage in in-depth communication through virtual and non-virtual means with interpreters, translators, and young sinologists from over a dozen countries, including the UK, the US, Turkey, Poland, Tunisia, Peru and Vietnam. The theme for the events was "Stories Connect the World", and the discussions revolved around topics such as "How to make Chinese Literature known to the World" and "Translation and Dissemination of Chinese Literature".
In 2022, the Multilingual Young Translators Expert Seminar was held with a focus on the researching and studying of translation skills used for translating Chinese literary works. The seminar attracted more than 120 young interpreters and translators from China and abroad. Three types of courses, namely "Open Classes by Famous Literary Writers", "Lectures by Famous Interpreters and Translators" and "Advanced Interpretation and Translation Practice", were also introduced as an innovative move and were offered in five different languages: Spanish, Italian, Romanian, Hungarian and Danish. Five famous Chinese writers, including Cao Wenxuan, a famous children's literature writer, and Xu Zechen, the winner of the 10th Mao Dun Literature Award, along with 11 other senior experts and scholars from China and other parts of the world, including Professor Sun Xintang from Beijing Language and Culture University, Professor Wen Zheng and Professor Ding Chao from Beijing Foreign Studies University, renowned Romanian sinologist Luminita Balan, and renowned Chinese Hungarian translator Yu Zemin, were invited for the seminar. A total of 15 informative seminars were held during the event.
