In November 2016, the first "Chinese Language Teaching Idols" was launched, gathering 700 Chinese and foreign master degree candidates majoring in international Chinese language education from 84 universities across the country. Through various selection rounds such as mass-election, promotion, and summer camp, the top eight contestants were shortlisted for the finals. After the "Wonderful Classroom" and "Thematic Speech", two champions, two runners-up, and four third winners were selected.

The 2nd "Chinese Language Teaching Idols" was launched in five regions of Beijing, North and Northeast China, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai, Western China, and Central and Southern China, in March 2018. Over 1,000 master degree candidates majoring in international Chinese language education registered for the event.

In October 2021, with the theme of "New Ideas, New Skills and New Practices", the "Chinese Language Teaching Idols" was organized in North China, Northeast China, East China, Southwest China, Northwest China, and Central South China by Beijing Foreign Studies University, Dalian University of Foreign Languages, East China Normal University, Yunnan Normal University, Lanzhou University, and South China Normal University, respectively. The event attracted 821 Chinese and foreign teachers and students from 154 universities in 28 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions. 

With the theme of "Innovating Chinese Language Teaching with New Standards", 2022 "Chinese Language Teaching Idols" was organized in North China, Northeast China, East China, Southwest China, Northwest China, and Central South China in July by Beijing Foreign Studies University, Dalian University of Foreign Languages, East China Normal University, South China Normal University, Northwest Normal University, and Yunnan Normal University, respectively. It attracted 219 Chinese and foreign teacher and student teams from 170 universities in 30 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions. At the same time, six overseas teams from Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Kenya, the United Kingdom, and Bulgaria demonstrated their teaching skills. The two-day national event attracted 21,000 online visitors.

With the theme of "Building Quality Chinese Language Classrooms", 2023 "Chinese Language Teaching Idols" was organized in North China, Northeast China, East China, Northwest China, Central South China, and Southwest China in June by Beijing Foreign Studies University, Northeast Normal University, East China Normal University, Xi'an International Studies University, South China Normal University, and Yunnan Normal University, respectively. It attracted 178 teams from 142 universities nationwide.

Meanwhile, the first Chinese Language Teacher Teaching Skills Competition was held in the United Arab Emirates and Thailand. More than 100 local Chinese language teachers from about 50 countries and regions came to the scene as learners and observers, and Chinese language learners and related practitioners from home and abroad watched its live broadcast online, accumulating 38,000 audiences.

The National Steering Committee of Graduate Education of International Chinese Language Education and the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) jointly organized 2024 "Chinese Language Teaching Idols" International Chinese Language Teaching Best Practices from July to December. 

With the theme of "Standards Leading and Innovation Driving", this event is held in Northeast China, North China, East China, Southwest China, Northwest China, and Central South China. Teachers and students shall sign up separately based on their universities and colleges, which are required to log in to the event's dedicated webpage (cltl.chineseplus.net) between July 15 and August 4 to submit application forms, as well as the teaching design plan, classroom teaching videos, and other teaching materials before September 8.
